What are the symptoms of ADHD?
ADHD normally shows up as children having a problem with paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Also known as driving you insane!
Symptoms of ADHD can include:
- Difficulty paying attention or staying focused on tasks
- Fidgeting or squirming in seat
- Difficulty remaining seated in appropriate situations
- Difficulty following through on instructions
- Difficulty with organization
- Avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort
- Losing things like toys, tools, or school assignments
- Being easily distracted
- Forgetting things on a daily basis
- Excessive talking
- Interrupting others
What are the usual ways of dealing with ADHD?
The usual strategies for dealing with ADHD include:
- Medication: Ritalin or Adderall are most people’s first stop. While they can reduce the symptoms, most parents agree the child is seldom happy or themselves.
- Behavioral therapy: This type of therapy can help individuals with ADHD learn strategies for managing symptoms, such as organization and time management techniques, and strategies for improving focus and attention.
- Parenting/teacher training: Parenting and teacher training programs can teach strategies for managing ADHD symptoms in children, such as positive reinforcement, setting clear expectations, and effective consequences.
- Exercise: Regular physical activity can help improve focus, attention, and impulse control.
- Diet: A healthy diet that is low in processed foods and high in fruits, vegetables, and lean protein may help improve symptoms of ADHD.
- Sleep: Ensuring enough quality sleep can improve attention, memory and mood.
- Accommodations: Accommodations at school or work, such as preferential seating or extended time on tests, can help individuals with ADHD succeed.
- Mindfulness and relaxation techniques : Mindfulness practices such as yoga and meditation can help reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve attention and focus.
While these are all valid and long term ways of helping a child (or adult) with ADHD, you can’t suddenly feed your kid a healthy diet when he’s throwing a tantrum in the snack aisle at Woolworths.
